AUSTIN — Rock the Park, the free concert series hosted by KUTX 98.9 and presented by Dell Children's Medical Center, returns to Mueller Lake Park Amphitheater this spring for its 17th season. The series runs three Friday evenings — March 27, April 10 and May 15 — featuring local artists. All shows are free, all ages and include ASL interpretation and reserved seating for those with limited mobility.
Meet the Artists
This season's lineup captures the range of Austin's music scene right now. Indie pop duo Dorio opens the series on March 27 with dreamy, retro-tinged electronic pop. April 10 brings SaulPaul, who builds layered freestyle beats in real time, alongside rising dance-pop artist francene rouelle, signed to Austin's Asian-American label mhart. The May 15 closer features DJ Jester the Filipino Fist spinning genre-defying vinyl sets and The Animeros delivering cumbia-inflected psychedelic rock, fresh off new music via Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound. The season is curated by KUTX Live Music Booker Deidre Gott and Bill Childs, host of the Sunday-evening kids' show Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child.
Why Free Music Still Matters
The series matters more than its casual atmosphere might suggest. The 2022 Greater Austin Area Music Census found that nearly 38% of respondents struggled to pay for housing, and about a third were considering leaving the area within three years. Musicians face stagnant wages while the cost of living climbs. When a city becomes too expensive for its working artists, it doesn't just lose bands — it loses the everyday cultural fabric that makes live music a shared experience rather than a luxury.
At the same time, demand for live music has surged. Live Nation reported attendance jumped 20% to 145 million in 2023, and that boom has pushed ticket prices higher, tilting the industry toward big tours and deep pockets. Free, outdoor series like Rock the Park offer a counterweight — proof that live music can still be a public good, not just an expensive night out. For a kid in the crowd watching a band up close, that access can be the spark that changes everything.
Seventeen Seasons and Counting
Seventeen seasons is long enough for a toddler on a blanket to become a teenager at the rail, long enough for a neighborhood to mark time by the songs it heard in the grass. Rock the Park's continued existence is a quiet act of advocacy: keep the gates open, keep the music local, keep the gathering free.
